NATIONAL NUTRITION DATABASE: HUGE NANNY STATE MEASURE (FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE)

Share

FDA SHOULD DISREGARD BIG GOVERNMENT PROPOSAL

“Living up to his reputation as an anti-consumer zealot, New York City commissioner of health Dr. Thomas Farley proposes the federal government create a national nutrition database, setting off the alarms among consumer freedom activists that this cowboy bureaucrat is looking for another way to vilify foods since his war on salt continues to be debunked by scientific studies,” says Orit Sklar, national spokeswoman for the consumer coalition My Food. My Choice!.

“This is another nanny state measure that big government activists are masking as a way to ‘foster competition.’ But, from other government programs we realize the government will use this not as a force of good but as a way to intimidate, pressure, and demonize food-makers and products – tactics that do not create a better environment for consumers. We will not cede any ground on this issue, because if you give the government an inch and they will take a yard. The FDA should swiftly reject the idea that has been presented to them.” Sklar says.

“It’s not surprising that Farley would propose such an outrageous overreach of government since his anti-salt crusade seeks to impose population wide salt reduction by bullying food companies and restaurants to change their recipes. My Food. My Choice! strongly believes this campaign by government agencies and activists for a national nutrition database is yet another assault on our individual liberties. If the state can control what we eat, there is nothing the state can’t control,” Sklar adds. “My Food. My Choice! is the citizen-led counterweight to local and national government bullies who’ve decided that the path to unlimited power is through our stomachs.”
