NEW VIDEO HITS BEVERAGE TAX AS ‘UN-AMERICAN’

PHILADELPHIA MAYOR: ‘NOW A FOOD POLICE CHIEF’

“Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter is disregarding the will of his constituents by proposing an outrageous beverage tax increase, prompting our grassroots coalition to today release an educational video opposing this job-killing, tyrannical governmental overreach,” says Orit Sklar, national spokeswoman for the consumer coalition My Food. My Choice!

“There’s no question that the majority of Americans recognize the un-American nature of beverage taxes. Mayor Nutter apparently thinks he is now the food police chief by targeting one product and the completely disingenuous way he has gone about it. It’s entirely manipulative, and consumer freedom advocates recognize the danger in giving government the power to place unfair, burdensome taxes on a particular product in an attempt to control our consumption and choices,” Sklar says.

“My Food. My Choice! believes the growing campaign to ban certain foods or tax them off the market by local and state governments— also fostered by the White House and various federal agencies— is yet another assault on our individual liberties. If the state can control what we eat, there is nothing the state can’t control,” Sklar adds. “My Food. My Choice! is the citizen-led counterweight to local and national government bullies who’ve decided that the path to unlimited power is through our stomachs. We hope our new educational video serves as a Paul Revere-like warning to Americans everywhere, but especially to Philadelphians.”
